Chapter 74: Surah Al-Muddaththir

O وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْO وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّر O قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ oيَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ
O وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ O وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ
• O you the embodiment of Haya and Carefulness; You the one who conceals while asleep under the cloak;
• Rise up so that you warn people {regarding this} "Your Sustainer Lord is great, therefore, praise His Greatness emphatically;
• and if your clothing has become unclean then wash it clean/purify it;
• i.e. by removing away odd adhesive stain;
• And do not favour someone merely for consideration of gain.

O وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ
O عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍO فَذَلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌO فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ

• {Warn people} and for the sake of your Sustainer Lord {on refusal of people and irrational response} exercise patience;
• for when the sound is blown in the trumpet
• for which reason [effect of big bang] that particular day is the Difficult Day;
• upon those who deliberately and persistently denied will be the opposite of ease.

O ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَ*ِيدًا

• You leave him for Me whom I had created lonely;
O وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
• and whom I granted resources in abundance;

O وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا
• and prominence with sons;
O وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا
• and for whom I made affairs smooth-comfortably lying like.
O ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ

• After having all this yet he is greedy that I should increase more.
O كَلَّا إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا

• No more; he has certainly persistently been opposing Our Ayat {communicated words of the Book}.
O سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا
• Soon I will make distress overtake him.

O إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
• Certainly he considered/pondered {the ayat you told him} and made his own assessment [negatively].
O ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ O فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
• For this woe/curse [in this worldly life] to him how he assessed ; Thereafter woe/curse {in the life hereafter} to him how he assessed ;
O ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ O ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ O ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
O إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ O فَقَالَ إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا سِ*ْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
• After some time he looked up;
• afterwards [seeing a blind man entering] he frowned /scowled /contracted his face with disgust and became hasty/impetuous;
• Thereafter he turned his face away and showed arrogance/pride and replied "This {what you recited to me] is an old gossip/lie kept repeated in time and space; and it is nothing but merely the word of a man".

O وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ O سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
• In future [in the hereafter] I will broil him by forcing him to enter into area of high temperature rays? And what is that thing may give you the perception as to what is high temperature rays/radiation?
Oلَوَّا*َةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ O لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ
• She is such that neither it permits/leaves anything to endure in its original state nor does she spare anyone/anything. Its peculiar feature is that it is burning/ scorching for the human skin.
Oعَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
• Upon her are nineteen males. [74.30]
وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْ*َابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً
• {Who these nineteen males are?} And We have not appointed the Warders of Hell except Angels {who are males}
وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
• and We have not made the count/number of them except as a source of exposure/perturbation for those who refuse;
إِيْمَانًا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
• in order that those whom Book was given may arrive at certainty, and enhance the conviction of those who have accepted;
وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ
• and that it [lack of information about the prison administration] may not be a botheration/confusion/disquiet for those whom Book was given and those who have accepted;
اللَّهُ بِهَذَا مَثَلًا وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ
• and that those in whose hearts is a disease and those who persistently refuse to accept may say, "What Allah intends by giving this example/information?[about warders like the worldly Prison/Jail/Dungeon]"
كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ
• This is how By giving example He lets (exposes) one who by design/will keeps straying and with it guides one who so intends/wishes.
O لِلْبَشَرِ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَى
• and except your Sustainer Lord no one can know His forces {executing His Commands} and [purpose of giving] this information is nothing except a recall/bring attention for man [that criminals eventually land in Jail guarded by Warders]. [74:31]
O وَالصُّبْ*ِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَO وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ Oكَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ
• The fact is, I swear by the Moon,
• and by the Night when it retreats/departs
• and by Dawn when it becomes prominent/evident,
O نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ Oإِنَّهَا لَإِ*ْدَى الْكُبَرِ
• that it is one of the mighty things;
• a warning/admonition and cause of fear for man,
O يَتَأَخَّرَ لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ
• so that anyone from you wishes that he may advance or hang back/go forward or remain behind; [74:37][hr]
O إِلَّا أَصْ*َابَ الْيَمِينِ O كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
• Every person will be imprisoned for his deeds; except companions of right handed {who will be independent/free}

O مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ O عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ O فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
• in gardens; they will question the criminals; "What has brought/entered you people in "Saqar" {the scorching heat}?[74:40-42]

O قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ
• They replied: "We were not amongst those who were maintainers of Salat;

O وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ
• Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;

O وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ
• And we used to enter into vain/conjectural discourse with those who enter into vain discourses.

O *َتَّى أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ O وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
• And we kept calling the day of judgment a lie till the time death overtook us"

O فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ
• For this reason the intercession of the intercessors did not avail them profit.

O فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍ O كَأَنَّهُمْ *ُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ O فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
• Then what is the cause for them to avoid/turn away from the Admonition in the manner as if they were like such donkeys, who opened teeth in scare/disgust from a lion/Like Zebras who irritant run away from lion?

O بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَى صُ*ُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
• No, {the excuse for running away is this} Everyone of them desires/demands to be given pages spread/spelled out;

O كَلَّا بَل لاَّ يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ
• Never will their demand be met; the fact of the matter is that they do not fear the Hereafter.

O كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌ
• No, {they can't get papers} this {Grand Quran} is certainly a reminder/admonition/the Word which has reached people.

O فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
• Therefore whosoever so willed he remembered/secured in memory/memorized/ read/got admonition/conveyed it {Grand Quran} to others;

O وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءُ اللَّهُ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَى وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ
• And people cannot save it in memory/keep it in remembrance except that Allah so desires/wills. He {who remembered/acted on Quran} is the member of family of heedful and pardoned/saved ones.
